Ten Commandments for a new Millennium
Crafted by hand, Anilore Banon created “10 Commandments for a New Millennium” (Dix Commandements pour un nouveau millenaire) on the occasion of the transition to the year 2000 for the city of Paris 2000 as a contemporary interpretation of universal code of ethics. Each fabricated steel column stands as a silent guardian, inviting introspection about our place in the world, our responsibilities to each other, and for the perpetuity of humanity.
These Commandments evoke topics such as the environment, science, and the protection of children, drawing upon the issues that affect our modern world. Conceptually, the work makes a universal statement and asks visitors to consider our shared core values and what it truly means to be human.

Originally, the complete work was designed to stand in harmony with Paris's legendary Pont des Arts bridge but instead found an equally impactful home in the Place Vendôme before relocating to several locations: the gardens of Terni (near Rome), the gardens of residence of the French Prime Minister, Magog Canada, the archaeological site of Carsuale (Italy), and Marmore (Italy).

While constructing the work in her studio, Anilore received a surprise visit from the renowned French anthropologist and philosopher Yves Coppens. Coppens had heard of her work and was eager to meet in person. After the visit, to Anilore’s surprise, he faxed her the following letter to express his sentiments towards 10 Commandments for a New Millennium.
